Which Requires Less Energy? AC Fan On or in Auto?

July 16, 2020

During the summer, running your air conditioning can be your highest monthly electricity charge. So, it’s normal that you’re seeking methods to consume less energy. That may involve using an energy-efficient AC setting or even making the switch to an ENERGY STAR®-rated system through air conditioner installation.

Changing your air conditioning’s fan setting is an additional way you can save money.

Your air conditioner relies on a fan to distribute the cool air it makes. You manage this fan at your thermostat by switching it to “auto,” which signifies the fan will only be on when the air conditioner is going. Or you can adjust it to “on,” which signifies it will operate constantly.

Does putting your AC on “fan” save energy in Norco and St. Charles Parish? Not necessarily. Typically, using your air conditioner’s fan all the time is going to drive up your energy bill slightly.

But it also provides a few pluses (and downsides) as far as your home’s comfort. Here’s why.

Air Conditioner Fan Set to “On”

Having your air conditioner’s fan run all day can better balance your house’s comfort. This is good if you have a two-story residence, since rooms upstairs can be hotter. It’s also great if you have difficulties with uneven cooling due to hot and cold areas.

It’s also good if one of your loved ones suffers from allergies, asthma or other respiratory issues. That’s since the air is constantly being dispersed and filtrated. However, you may have to change your air filters more frequently.

Having the fan on all the time can also drive up your energy bills. It could also result in the fan wearing out faster and need air conditioning repair.

Your house may also feel more humid. Air conditioning helps balance humidity by clearing water from the air. But if the fan is continually running, it’s harder for moisture to drain from the condenser externally.

Air Conditioner Fan Set to “Auto”

This is the most energy-efficient setting, as the fan will only run when your air conditioner does. It’s good if your house always seems cool, regardless of which area you’re in.

There are a few drawbacks to using the auto setting. You might have hot and cold locations in your house and decreased air quality. This is since air isn’t always being distributed or being constantly purified.

On the flip side, you’ll consume a lower amount of energy and won’t be required to replace your air filter as frequently. Both are savings that can add up throughout the year, so you’ll have to think about what’s right for your family.
