Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely escaped winter in Norco and St. Charles Parish just yet. Mother Nature may have a few nice days, but she’s always prepped to remind us that she’s in charge. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call a professional out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall may bury your air conditioner in the snow, diminishing its performance when the temperatures finally warm up for the season. Not to mention it can hinder a high-efficiency system from running as such. The situation could become an even bigger problem too if you don’t prepare for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are things you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner work properly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the coming days and weeks.

  1. Ensure you have a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Check the area frequently to ensure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that may have accumulated during the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, covering your air conditioner could end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner can be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, causing damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Norco and St. Charles Parish will probably fluctuate up and down over the last few days of cold weather, you can’t count out the possibility of weather that can alter the performance of your air conditioner.
